The most important mistakes to avoid when building a Website or Blog
April 14, 2009 |
There a lot of things to take into account when you build a Website or Blog. Picture the scene you have put all this effort and expertise into your Website or Blog and then realise that you have made a catalogue of errors with it.
Even though there are probably thousands of methods that you should avoid I have listed my favourite five to give you a really good insight into Website & Blog building:
Start for the right reasons – Plan your website in advance and don’t go off key with totally different content. I have seen many sites that have tried there hardest but after purchasing their domain name that focused on a certain type of product ended up with something quite different. But because people had got used to them on that domain they felt it was impossible to change it at such a late stage.
Don’t just think of the money – Yes we all need money to survive in life but it shouldn’t be your only motivation. Believe it or not a viewer will be able to tell in a flash and this may put them off purchasing through you. Contributing to charity is always an amazing hit say if you had a healthy lifestyle website even a penny of every pound to a charity of a friend or relative that has died will gain you a lot of respect. You can also consider planning your project through a hobby – not only will you enjoy doing it so much more but you will also shine through as someone that is not just trying to fill their pocket with crispy notes.
Not updating your site – If you don’t update your website regularly you run a real risk of losing out on potential customers and those that are already with you will drop at an alarming rate. Your updates should include things like links (please no dead ones), latest products, closing a webpage if a special offer is now over and that banner adverts are as up to date as possible.
Not asking people for feedback – This is vital, you want to know that your customers are satisfied, that they can view your website properly and most of all that they like your products. As your marketing campaign should always focus around them this is one of the most important parts of your setup. You can also search related forums and get people to check your website for you or find out through recent questions what people want right now
Hosting problems – This really is your worst case scenario, you have spent time and effort getting everything else in place and then it hits you that your hosting is down and there is nothing you can do about it. You had gone to a company that doesn’t provide quality hosting and had chosen price over product. Furthermore the only way out is to change hosting companies that will cause even more disruption to your service. It is also worth noting that is a great idea to have two separate domains that way you can have your email service through one and your Website or Blog through the other. I am personally a big fan of this as then you will always have one or the other working and it will improve the customer service that you provide.
