How To Construct A Profitable Blog That Will Regularly Make Money For You
February 3, 2010 |
There are literally millions of blogs on the Internet today, but very few of them are successful and even fewer of them continually make money. But that is one of the primary reasons that people get into blogging - to make money. So how can you do it? How can one build a blog that will be successful and make money over the long run? Well, there is not a “magic formula”, but there are certain key principles that most successful bloggers follow. But none of the tips that you are about to read will replace hard work. Without incredibly hard work you are not going to be a very successful blogger. It just is not going to happen. So if you are looking for a “get rich quick” blogging scheme you have come to the wrong article.
The following are 7 keys to becoming a successful blogger….
#1) Pick Your Platform
This is very important. Some people have had huge success using Blogger to run their blogs, and we have used Blogger ourselves, but the truth is that we highly recommend that you put the time into learning how to get your own domain and how to install Wordpress on that domain. You can be successful with Blogger, and it is free, but the reality is that Blogger can take your blog down at any time and if they do you will lose ALL of the work that you put into that blog. But if you own your own domain you are going to have much greater control over your blog. Plus search engines seem to like Wordpress more than Blogger in our experience. If you do not know how to set up a Wordpress blog there are a lot of technical guides out there that can help you. For purposes of this article, we are assuming that you already know how to do that. It can be a little intimidating at first, but the truth is that it is not that hard to set a blog up.
#2) Pick Your Subject
Successful bloggers pick a subject to blog about that they know a lot about and that they are passionate about. We have set up a LOT of blogs, and the blogs that always do the best are the ones that are about a topic that we love. So don’t necessarily gravitate towards something that you think will make money. Instead, pick something to blog about that you really love. This will help you from getting burned out on blogging as well.
#3) Pick Your Keywords
You are going to want to pick the right keywords for your blog. This is how search engines are going to find you. For example, “cow tipping” is a keyword. People who are interested in “cow tipping” are going to type that phrase into Google. If you are going a blog about “cow tipping” you are going to want to put that phrase into the title of your blog, into the description of your blog, into the titles of many of your blog posts and you will want to sprinkle that phrase throughout your blog posts. But don’t overdo it or Google will penalize you. The key is for people who are interested in the topic of your blog to be able to find it. If you name your blog “I love potato chips” when it is all about cow tipping the search engines are simply not going to bring you a lot of traffic.
#4) Choose The Right Ad Programs
To make money on your blog you have to put up ads. The most popular advertising program for bloggers is Google Adsense, but there are many others out there as well. You will want to select ad networks and affiliate programs that relate well to the subject of your blog. After all, a blog about home decor is not going to do a very good job of getting people to click on ads about football jerseys.
#5) Write Great Content
This is the most overlooked step by most bloggers. There is a ton of garbage on the Internet. To stand out you are simply going to have to write something really good or really helpful. Always remember - content is king. If your content is great then your blog has a good chance of succeeding in the long run. If your content is garbage, you might be able to generate some traffic for a little while but in the end your blog will be a failure.
#6) Build Your Links
To get on to the first page of Google you have to build your links. Google basically looks at links as “votes” for your site. The sites that get the best (highest quality) and the most links are the sites that are going to rank the highest for that keyword (everything else being equal). The Google ranking formula is actually extremely complicated, but links always have been, and probably always will be, an absolutely crucial factor in determining where your site will be ranked. So how many links do you need? For a non-competitive keyword you may only need 10, while for a really competitive keyword you may need a million. A great tool for seeing how competitive your keyword might be is Google Adwords Keyword Tool. That tool will show you how much traffic is typically generated for that keyword. The higher the traffic, the more competition you will probably have.
#7) See What Is Working And What Is Not And Refine Your System
The Internet is constantly changing, so you must continually monitor your results. If you do not know how to use Google Analytics, you need to. It will tell you how your blog is doing and where your traffic is coming from. When you find something that is working for your blog, you know that you can repeat that for another blog. When you find something that is not working you know that you need to refine your system.
But becoming a successful blogger is not going to happen overnight. It takes time and a massive amount of hard work. In your first month of blogging you will be lucky to make a couple of bucks. But if you stick with it you can definitely make money blogging. Unfortunately, statistics show that over 90 percent of those reading this article will not stick with it long enough to succeed in the end. So if you want to be a successful blogger, tell yourself that you are determined to be in the 10 percent that simply will not give up. It is definitely worth it.
