Coming up with a profitable idea is very possible if you understand the potential of knowing how to get into the correct niche. However, sometimes this can be a daunting task. Finding a profitable niche is where many aspiring affiliates get stuck. It can sometimes take months to find a niche that will earn you a decent profit.

However, there are some guidelines that can be followed to make the process a little easier.

First of all, find a broad category idea such as shopping, sports, marketing, etc… Make a list of some of the ideas that you find interesting. Then pick one that you wish to focus on.

After you’ve picked a subset, then you look into the products within that subset to sell. Focus on picking one item out of that subset. Part of this process is doing the proper research. Read up on what kinds of products people may find useful in the target subset that you chose. The key is understanding your target audience.

Finally, you can get an idea of the potential profit this niche may bring you by doing a simple keyword search on google. Try using some of the common phrases from your niche and check out the competing websites that google returns. This will help you research whether others are making a profit in this niche. One thing to look for is how many advertisements are being displayed. Fewer ads is better for your profit margin.

These are a few basic rules that you can follow when getting into the business of affiliate marketing. As you gain experience you will pick up more strategies on how to become successful in your niche.

A Hybrid Approach to Autoblogging

While a lot of my sites are autoblogs, I have observed a little something recently. I own a couple of websites with a good amount of unique content, in the form of articles that I authored myself, plus some with a combination of my own content and articles from the UAW plugin. I’m going to be honest; these sites which include original content do beat my autoblogs when it comes to income.

Now, writing original content alone is not sufficient to acquire love from Google. It is the search engines mantra, but it’s essentially a crock of b.s,. Not long ago I read a post from Michael Grey where he outlined how he produced fantastic content over a six-month time period, even making it to the front page of Digg on five occasions, and he nevertheless received very little love from the search engines.

So what’s the best approach then? Autoblogging, or creating unique content? What about combining both?

Produce a few autoblogs, wait two-to-three months to wait for the website to break out of the search engine dance, and take note from Awstats from your server what your most viewed pages are. Then, from your data you’ve received from Awstats, perform some further research into specific search terms and look for what your competitors do when it comes to getting those keywords to rank. Now, armed with this data, go ahead and create some original articles for your website. You won’t have wasted a bunch of commitment writing and submitting articles about key phrases that nobody has any interest in. Or else keywords that have lots of interest, but they don’t turn into sales, because visitors are just searching for free information about that keyword.

If you’re super lazy, you do not have to write the original content yourself. Just use the keywords you found out of your Awstats which are obtaining Google love, and rely on them to add extra posts to your website with your autoblogging plugin. I did this very thing for one site in July, and my AdSense earnings doubled for that site in which I made use of this plan.

Needless to say, it goes without saying that when you discover your winning pages and add content for that keyword, it’s not going to do you much good if you don’t implement a significant back linking campaign. Don’t go insane and try to back link every page in your website, just the ones that show promise in terms of page views and earnings.
